Telling Someone You're Not Interested in a Relationship
Close the door on a romantic possibility when they're more invested than you are.
About the wording below: every example in this library is written to illustrate a pattern. They are illustrative examples, not transcripts, and not accounts of anyone's real conversation. Use them as a starting point and put them in your own words.
The situation
Someone you've been on a few dates with, or been talking to for a while, is clearly further in than you are. They may have said something, or it may just be obvious. You know you don't want a relationship with them, and continuing to let it drift is starting to feel dishonest.
Why this conversation is difficult
This is harder than turning down a first date because a pattern has formed and expectations have had time to build. There's also a pull to protect their feelings by leaving a small opening — and that opening is exactly what makes the conversation crueller in the long run. The kindest version is also the one that's hardest to say, because it removes all hope.
Your goal
Give them a clear, unambiguous answer, at a moment when they aren't being publicly embarrassed, and without dressing it up as something it isn't.
Recommended approach
- 1Do it in person or on a call if a real rapport has formed. A text that ends something with momentum feels like a demotion.
- 2Say the outcome before the explanation. Lead with the decision, not the reasoning.
- 3Don't offer friendship as a consolation prize unless you genuinely mean it and can sustain it.
- 4Expect that the reason you give will be tested. Choose one that's true and that you can hold.
- 5Give them a clean exit from the conversation. Don't require them to respond well.
What you could say
Example wording
"I want to be straight with you rather than let this drift. I've really enjoyed getting to know you, but I'm not looking to take this further romantically. You haven't done anything wrong — I just know it isn't the right thing for me, and I don't want to string you along."
Softer version
"I've been putting off saying this because I didn't want to hurt you, which I realise isn't fair to you either. I'm not in a place to build a relationship with you, and I don't want to keep going as though that might change. I'm sorry."
Direct version
"I'm not going to take this further. I've enjoyed our time together, but I don't see a relationship here, and I'd rather tell you now than in three months."
Text-message version
"I want to be honest with you rather than let this drift. I'm not looking to take this further romantically. You've done nothing wrong — I just know it's not right for me."
What to avoid saying
"I'm not ready for a relationship right now."
It sounds like a timing problem, which means it sounds fixable. If the real answer is no, say no.
"Maybe in the future."
You're offering hope you can't honour. People reorganise their lives around sentences like this.
"It's not you, it's me."
It's the most recognisable cliché in the language, and it tells the other person you didn't think they deserved a real answer.
"Can we still be friends?"
Offered reflexively, this keeps a channel open that neither of you is in a position to use well yet. Only offer it if you'd actually do it.
If the other person reacts badly
They're hurt and say so.
Let it land without defending yourself. "I know, and I'm sorry. You're allowed to be upset with me about this."
They try to negotiate — "but we get on so well."
Acknowledge the truth in it without reopening the decision. "We do. And I'm still not going to take it further. That part isn't up for discussion."
They go cold or lash out.
Resist the urge to correct the record. "I understand. I'm going to give you space." Then give it.
The framework behind this script
Clear is kind
The idea that vagueness is the more generous option is one of the most persistent myths in difficult conversations. In practice, ambiguity transfers the discomfort to the other person and extends it indefinitely.
